Spy Royal is a junctionless script typeface with 6 styles. It sits somewhere between a classic script and the streamline fonts of the mid-20th century.
The starting point was a 1954 Japan Airlines ad promoting flights to San Francisco, Honolulu, and Okinawa aboard the new DC-6B “Pacific Courier.” The original lettering only covered “JAPAN AIR LINES” — just a handful of uppercase letters. From that, a full font had to be imagined.
First released in 2004, Spy Royal went through a major rework and now comes in additional styles, including shadow-lines and 3D-shadow.
It's one of our buyers' favorite fonts – and the projects people use it for are all over the place. An Italian company put it on their Martini cocktail bottles, for the alcohol warning “14.4% alc.” An indie developer used it for a Playdate game. It shows up on racing posters, bar menus, vintage logos, and hot rod merch. Basically anything that needs that mid-century edge.
It's a great fit for anything with a retro feel – cars, racing, hot rods, cocktails, vintage restaurants, gasoline, and airlines. You know the vibe.
Spy Royal includes alternate characters, ligatures, and West European diacritics.
